An Approach Control Surveillance (APS) rating entitles the holder to provide an air traffic control service to arriving, departing or transiting aircraft with the use of surveillance equipment.
The Radar rating endorsement to the Approach Control Surveillance rating indicates that radar is used as the surveillance equipment.
The Approach Control Surveillance module is designed to impart skills and knowledge to students to handle traffic in approach and departure sectors using radar. The outcome of the course is a set of competences that enable the students to receive a student certificate of competency for Approach Control Surveillance rating with Radar endorsement.
The training is composed of both theoretical lessons and events, followed by practical applications in simulator. Most of the effort is focused on simulator work where a generic airspace has been specially designed for the task.
Simulator training is divided into three parts in which the level of difficulty is gradually increased. The students start by working as a single controller. In the second part of the course the emphasis is on cooperation between the departure controller and arrival controller; and during the final stage of training the students learn about human factors and procedures for emergencies and unusual events.
Entry Point North hires instructors from a current operational ATC environment. This enables us to maintain a very close link with new developments and a high level of competency. Throughout the training, all students operate in a teamwork simulator environment, enhancing a well structured learning process.
The module follows closely the Eurocontrol Common Core Content specifications and prerequisites, EU standards and Best Practice agreements.
