AFIS Courses

Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) is an information service delivered to assist the safe and efficient conduct of traffic in an uncontrolled aerodrome environment.

The AFIS course at Entry Point North is designed to provide students with the initial theoretical knowledge and practical basic training to become an Aerodrome Flight Information Service Officer (AFISO) at an aerodrome in uncontrolled airspace.

The theoretical lessons include procedures for AFIS and training in Human factors such as Professional conduct, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), and Team Resource Management (TRM), as well as training in AFIS related tasks such as the provision of an alerting service (ALRS) and flight information service (FIS), winter operations and aircraft performance.

The main part of the course takes place in a 3D tower simulator and consists of individual exercises with increasing difficulty. The airspace/aerodrome is generic and simulates traffic in an AFIS environment, with one active aerodrome with single runway operations. The simulator exercises include varying traffic and weather conditions as well as training in emergency/ unusual situations.

The Entry Point North AFIS training is compliant with upcoming EUROCONTROL recommendations for AFIS training.

The EUROCONTROL manual for Aerodrome Flight information Service (AFIS) says that to be able to maintain their competence AFIS officers shall complete a periodical refresher training and training in emergency/unusual situations. The AFIS Refresher course at Entry Point North is designed for AFIS officers to refresh their operational knowledge and skills and present the updates on developments.
