The ATSEP Basic course is designed for technical personnel operating and maintaining air traffic management (ATM) equipment. It gives them basic knowledge of operational and technical aspects of ATM and prepares them for the Shared course and qualification courses, which are the next steps to becoming an ATSEP.
After completion of the basic ATSEP training, the participants have:
- Knowledge and understanding of the subjects described below in accordance with the EASA ANNEX XIII – Part-PERS requirements for service providers concerning personnel training and competence assessment Subpart A – Air Traffic Safety Electronic Personnel.
- Understanding of operational and technical side of ATM.
- Knowledge and understanding of the importance of teamwork.
The course duration is 8 days (classroom) or 10 days (Virtual Classroom). The training contains theoretical lessons, group assignments and exercises, and is delivered by professional international instructors. Additionally, participants share their experiences amongst each other and join discussions based on the course material and inputs from instructors. Active participant involvement is an important part of this course: group discussions and assignments help them gain a deeper understanding of the subject and course material.
The theory offers in-depth information on how to apply different technologies in ATM, covering various aspects of operating and maintaining ATM equipment.
The participants take part in simulator training to gain an understanding of the work of air traffic controllers (radar simulator) and pilots (flight simulator). In Virtual Classroom training, this simulator training is changed to video demonstrations.
This part of the training helps the students understand the technical equipment they work with from the perspective of the end-users.

The ATM work environment.
Air Traffic Familiarisation (ATF)
The role of ATC in the ATM environment.
Aeronautical Information Services (AIS)
The organisation of AIS.
The impact of meteorology on aircraft and ATS operations, the importance of meteorological information in ATM.
The principles used in voice and data communication.
The principles of navigation and navigational aids and their use in ATM.
The basic principles used in primary radar, secondary radar and other surveillance systems, and their use in ATM operations.
Data Processing (DAT)
The principles used in data processing and their use in ATM operations.
System Monitoring and Control (SMC)
The SMC function and description of its basic principles.
Maintenance Procedures (MTN)
General maintenance strategy and procedures.
Facilities and level of performance required. The physical classroom course can include study visits to air traffic control facilities and aviation-related environment.
There are no prerequisites for taking part in this course.
To become an ATSEP, participants need to complete the ATSEP Basic course, the ATSEP Shared course, and at least one ATSEP Qualification course. This Initial Training can be completed in two different orders:
- ATSEP Basic > ATSEP Shared > ATSEP Qualification, or
- ATSEP Basic > ATSEP Qualification > ATSEP Shared
