Course aim

This course gives students from European Air Navigation Service Providers the knowledge and skills they need to work as Air Traffic Controllers in a Terminal Control environment.

This course is a rating endorsement for an ACS or APS rating, and can either be part of students’ Initial Training, or as a further endorsement after working as an active Air Traffic Controller for several years. Students who pass the course may apply for this endorsement in their TCL Student Air Traffic Controller License or Air Traffic Controller license.

After completion of this course, the students:

  • Have knowledge, skills and understanding in accordance with the Eurocontrol training objectives.
  • Have skills to perform Approach and Terminal Control Radar Service in an approach and terminal control procedural environment safely, expeditiously, orderly and according to rules and regulations.
  • Have knowledge of the importance of teamwork and of human factors related issues that can affect personal and team performance.

Course structure

The standard course is 5 weeks in duration and consists of theory followed by practical training in a radar simulator.

Theoretical training
We deliver the theoretical part of the course through a blend of classroom training, group work, and discussions. Throughout the course, eLearning elements allow a flexible learning environment as students can participate in these lessons online. During the theoretical training, the students develop teamwork skills that help them perform during the practical training in the simulator.

Simulator training
The simulator training focuses on establishing correct methods in handling departing, arriving and overflying traffic in normal situations and for some special events, and co-operation between a controller managing a holding pattern and inbound sequencing from the holding pattern and a controller handling the TMA (terminal area) traffic.

Content in brief

The course covers topics such as, but not limited to:

  • Rules and methods for radar vectoring, sequencing, separations, phraseology and co-ordinations used in an approach service.
  • Different approach methods, such as ILS and VA.
  • Methods and handling of arriving, departing and overflying traffic in a correct, safe and orderly way.
  • Applying correct methods for sequencing of traffic and co-operation methods.
  • Methods for working in approach and feeder stacker environment.

  • The course is approved by the Swedish National Supervisory Authority.
  • Entry Point North is certified as a training organization by the Swedish National Supervisory Authority.
