ENGLISH REFRESHER COURSE FOR OPERATIONAL ATC STAFF

Course aim

The aim of the course is to enhance Aviation English skills of operational and supporting ATC staff: ATCOs, FDOs, FISOs, NOTAM officers, staff involved in airspace and flow management, etc.

Course objectives

After completing the course, participants have:
  • The skills to confidently communicate in real-life situations in aviation.
  • Deeper knowledge of aviation English.

Course overview

The course comprises classroom training consisting of:
  • English lessons
  • Role play exercises
  • Tasks based on aviation videos
  • Discussions
  • Vocabulary exercises
  • Reading and understanding aviation relevant news articles
As the communication in aviation is predominantly oral and often lacks visual contact, the course seeks to enhance participants’ listening comprehension, vocabulary and speaking skills.

To ensure the wide range of vocabulary, each day is devoted to a different topic like pilot incapacitation, ground movement incidents, etc. (see Content in brief).

Prerequisites

The Refresher Training course is designed for licensed operational ATC staff.

Compliance with regulations

According to ICAO Doc 9835 (Manual on the Implementation of ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements) it is mandatory for air traffic controllers to demonstrate minimum level 4 of formally assessed language proficiency both in the use of phraseology and plain language. The English proficiency test certificate validity depends on the test result. Recurrent testing for air traffic controllers who demonstrate language proficiency below level 6 is required after three (level 4) or six (level 5) years.
