How online training is transforming ATSEP development

Online training is transforming the development of ATSEP skills by using digital platforms filled with engaging course materials. This approach helps ATSEPs become proficient in understanding Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, and Data Processing systems within the Air Traffic Management environment (CNS-DPR/ATM) while maintaining current regulatory standards.

We sat down with Gerald “Gerry” Trenwith, ATSEP Subject Matter Expert and drilled a bit deeper on ATSEP and Online training.

Gerry: Online training has become a widely embraced resource for developing ATSEP skills, thanks to its flexibility and great accessibility. It offers a convenient way to stay updated with the latest knowledge requirements and delivers complex ATSEP content efficiently, anytime and anywhere.

Online training also enforces a level of consistency of material presented in comparison with in-class instructor-led deliveries.

Gerry: Even though in-class courses are still available, many clients prefer online courses.

Our online product is available in two delivery options:

On-Demand, where self-paced digital modules feature text content enhanced by diagrams and animations and supported by videos. There are try-it-out challenges after each objective, quizzes after each lesson section, and an online knowledge assessment. The on-demand products are flexible, where learners control their schedule, making them perfect for shift work and busy operation environments, where the upskilling process can go hand in hand with operational demand.

The Second option, called Live guidance, has an added feature to the On-Demand in that an instructor will be made available on a scheduled invite, where all participants in the course will have a “live” session where the course material is interrogated and discussed. Learners can ask in-depth questions, creating a opportunity to understand the content better.

EPN understands that some learners may benefit from more personalised, one-on-one support, an important part of our training philosophy. Our Learning Coordinator is always ready to help with additional requests and ensure you achieve the best possible knowledge transfer.

What’s great is that our solutions are flexible and can grow with your needs, whether looking at just one participant or an entire team. There are three different solutions to meet client needs. The client can choose specific courses that suit their goals, from Basic to Qualification courses in CNS and DPR, and they can easily add or remove modules to tailor everything perfectly to what they need. We call this the Essential solution.

Entry Point North also offers an Elevated solution, it’s a comprehensive, branded team training portal that meets ISO and regulatory standards. It includes additional features like administration, tracking learner progress and histories, providing learner accessibility through chat and email support, creating a smooth, user-friendly experience.

Finally, we also offer an Exclusive solution, it’s a fully customised portal and course content, thoughtfully co-created with our client’s subject matter experts and Entry Point North’s talented instructional designers. We tailor the material to reflect their unique style, language, and specific content needs, ensuring a truly personal and engaging learning experience.

Learners typically have 90 days of access, with estimated “commitment days” to guide pacing.

Gerry: Absolutely. All our ATSEP online courses, including the Initial courses, cover ICAO Doc 10057 and EASA Reg 2017/373 regulatory requirements and learning taxonomies.

They come with structured exams: a multiple-choice test with randomised questions, a 75% pass threshold, and a chance for a reassessment, ensuring learners meet formal competence benchmarks.

A certificate is issued upon passing, supporting knowledge recognition and compliance documentation.

Gerry: One of our clients, AVISEQ, a Swedish CNS equipment provider, moved ATSEP training online via an Exclusive solution, customised for them. That change allowed staff to complete theoretical modules without travel or disruption. Management now has complete visibility into progress, making compliance easier to demonstrate.

Gerry: Online delivery enables learning to become embedded and continuous, not just episodic. The blended model, online theory, with optional Live Guidance, is now the operational standard. Modular client-branded portals will become indispensable in building and maintaining competence.

At Entry Point North, we love connecting with external ATSEPS to evaluate and improve our methods and content constantly. We’re about researching and developing new applications of future technologies, like AI, to help us integrate more advanced tools quickly. This way, we can support adaptive learning and smarter progress tracking. For ANSPs and ATSEPs, this means providing training that reflects today’s operational realities and prepares everyone for the challenges of tomorrow with confidence.
