Course aim

This course is designed for operational Air traffic controllers, AFIS operators or other personnel who conduct aeronautical meteorological observations. The aim of the course is to refresh and update their knowledge, skills and understanding related to observation and reporting of local meteorological condition as part of:

  • Local routine reports (MET reports).
  • Local special reports (SPECIAL).

After completing this course, the participants have updated and refreshed knowledge and understanding of: abreviations, codes and regulations found in on ICAO annex 3, Meteorological Service for International Air Navigation and Easy Access Rules for Air Traffic Management/Air Navigation Services (Regulation (EU) 2017/373) and optional national regulations.

Course structure

The standard course is one day in duration. Participants gain a thorough understanding of the subject matter by learning the theory in classroom training, workbook exercises, and discussions. Additionally, they receive practical training through encoding exercises.

We can adapt the course to the customer’s requirements, for example by adding practical observations and a study visit.

Content in brief

The course comprises theoretical lessons together with practical exercises and covers topics such as, but not limited to:

  • Description of meteorological phenomena (different parameters observed, the impact of adverse weather etc.)
  • Creating and verifying a Local Routine Report (METREPORT), Local Special Report (SPECIAL) and METAR.
  • Update on international and national regulations for meteorological observation

Prerequisites

The course is primarily intended for operational meteorological observers.

We recommend an English language proficiency of at least ICAO level 4.
