Course aim

This course provides ATSEPs with essential knowledge in functional safety and information system security. As air navigation systems become more interconnected and reliant on digital infrastructure, the course aims to strengthen ATSEP competencies in managing safety-related responsibilities and protecting against cyber security threats.

By addressing the operational impact of functional failures and the rising risks of cyberattacks, the course empowers ATSEPs to actively contribute to the resilience, safety, and regulatory compliance of air traffic services.

What you will learn

You will learn to:

Functional Safety (FST):

• Understand the ATSEP’s role in safety management systems and reporting routines.
• Assess the impact of functional failures on operational safety, including environmental and human factors.
• Explain the use of NOTAMs in mitigating safety risks.

Information System Security (ISS):

• Define core cybersecurity terminology and regulatory frameworks relevant to aviation.
• Recognise key roles and policies in organisational security management.
• Understand risk management systems and standard information security frameworks.
• Apply concepts like the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) to functional systems.
• Identify various cyber threats, including malware, social engineering, and physical/network attacks.
• Describe the phases of cyberattacks and methods for detection, prevention, and response.
• Appreciate the need for a holistic, layered security architecture in air traffic environments.

How you will learn

The standard access is 90 days, and we estimate that one day is needed to complete the course.
