Test aim
This test assesses the English proficiency level of air traffic controllers, operational flight crew, ATS personnel, and students who are required to obtain language proficiency endorsement according to Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/340 meet the ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements as stated in ICAO Annex 1.
Test overview
The English Proficiency test was developed by the Swedish CAA in cooperation with Mayflower College in the United Kingdom. It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and can be delivered at Entry Point North or at client premises.
The test assesses the candidate’s language proficiency in common, concrete, or work-related topics, as well as the capability to communicate when confronted with a linguistic, situational complication, or an unexpected turn of events. The test format and type of tasks are standardised. As the candidate progresses through the test, the tasks become more complex.
The test consists of:
- Part 1: Work-related Interview
- Part 2: Interactive Comprehension
- Part 3: Description & Discussion
Participants who pass the test receive an English Proficiency certificate.
Evaluation
The candidate is assessed in the six different areas of the ICAO language proficiency requirements:
- Pronunciation
- Fluency
- Structure
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
- Interaction
The candidate is awarded a score of 1 – 6 for each of the six skills. The final test score equals the lowest score that the candidate received. This means that the candidate must demonstrate proficiency at least at Level 4 in all the above skills, to meet the required ICAO level 4 proficiency.
Compliance with regulations
- Approved by the Swedish CAA.
- Fully compliant with ICAO Doc 9835.
- Accepted by civil aviation authorities in many countries (including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Dubai, Turkey, and Estonia).
